Also known as Vaccinium myrtillus, is an anti-oxidant and is recommended to assist in visual fatigue and may also be of assistance in the maintenance of peripheral circulation by providing nutrition to the eyes.
Bilberry is deciduous shrub which grows to about 40cm (16inches) high, of small white or pink flowers and spherical berries that ripen to purple - black. There have been many studies of Bilberry since World war when it was observed that Royal Air Force pilots who had been eating Bilberry jam, noticed that their night vision had improved. The pharmacologically active constituents in Bilberry fruits are the anthocyanosides, which are a group of flavonoid glycosides.
